Problems with new biochemistry graduates

How we propose to alleviate the problems

About the Scenarios

About the Solutions

Dilemmas Arising from Socio-economic Status

Some science graduates can and do make a lot of money. Examples include (1) a consulting scientist with literally hundreds of client firms (2) a prolific inventor with a lot of licensing income and (3) an entrepreneur who has turned laboratory findings into marketable innovations. But let's face it. Most of our science graduates start out in low-paying jobs. How low the pay seems to be is related to the reference group that the graduate compares him/herself with and the perceived importance of the monetary remuneration relative to other factors like job satisfaction. Here we present you with 2 scenarios as follow: Read each scenario and make comments.

Low-paying Job (อาชีพเป็นปมด้อย)

After graduation, you become a biochemist, barely making ends meet on a regular salary from a company. Your childhood friend who never went to college, however, has become a popular performer on prime-time television. He owns several cars and a big mansion. He even purchased a new house for his parents. Thinking of him makes you feel depressed and desperate. Life is not fair. You spent countless nights studying in school but end up making much less money than your friend who achieved far less than you in high school. Your relatives have also made matters worse for you by complaining that you should not have studied science in college because scientists are nothing but employees-for-life. You feel like quitting your job but have no idea what to do for a living once you quit. Thinking makes you feel more depressed. Let's go out for a drink at the Bar.

What a Depressing Life!

You have graduated and accepted employment, with a salary just enough to cover your monthly expenses. Your old buddies in college, all with wealthy parents, are sent abroad for further education. On returning home they are either put in charge of a family business or sent to work with local firms or the government to gather more experience and connections. Now all of them are high-ranking executives in their family businesses or outside ventures. On weekends they would spend their leisure time at resots in Hua Hin or in Phuket, sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, golfing, or horseback riding. On weekdays they would start their days with a healthy exercise at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club before going to work. On vacations they would take their families to popular tourist destinations in different foreign countries. Your life, however, is quite humble and down-to-earth. You exerise in public parks. Your regular entertainment is to watch a matinée movie alone on Wednesday, where a ticket costs only 100 Baht. You've just received an invitation to a friend's wedding that is going to take place at a luxury hotel. The place is far beyond your financial reach if your were going to get married but there is no problem since there is no one for you to be married to. Who would want to marry a poor person like you? In retrospect, you life wasn't that bad as a kid but you seem so poor after you graduate. You thought about working for a rich friend of yours but decided not to in order to keep the friendship. You can't keep your life from going downhill. How can you be financially secure? Should you use your knowledge and skill in biochemistry to synthesize certain drugs that can make you a rich person very quickly? Should you try to rob a rich victim to redistribute and equalize the wealth? Or if there is no way out, maybe you should commit suicide in order to end the misery of being as poor as you are.
